Ispidina picta
African Pygmy Kingfisher
Kingfishers (Alcedinidae)Least Concern
A tiny (about 12 cm), jewel-like kingfisher with a rufous underside, violet-blue back and tail, and an orange face with a purple cheek patch. Unlike most kingfishers it is not tied to open water, instead favouring woodland, savanna edge, and coastal thicket, within its Senegal-to-Ethiopia West/Central African range.

Identification
Separated from the similar African Dwarf Kingfisher by its dark blue (not black) crown; sits motionless for long periods low in cover before darting after insect prey, unlike waterside kingfishers.
